Greenfingers!

As part of our work on plants in Science, we have been carrying out some experiments to see how different plants grow.  Our first test was to see how quickly broad beans take to germinate.  We gave half the class' seeds water every day and the other were watered every other day.  All our seeds sprouted and there wasn't much difference between the two sets of seeds.  We have now planted them out in our outdoor area so that we can see them grow into bean plants!

Our second test involved spring onions - and bringing them back from the dead!  We wanted to see if we could re-grow some spring oinions bought from the supermarket.  We placed them in some water and waited.  Within a week they had more than doubled in length and some had even grown new stems!

Our final experiment was designed to show how the stems of plants draw water up and transport it through the plant.  To do this we placed celery in dyed water.  Within a day or two, the blue dye had seeped up through the stem - of those that were not upside down!

Have a look at the photos to see how we got on.
