Art
At Woore Primary and Nursery School we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in art and design lessons. Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in art and design. We ensure that the act of investigating and making something includes exploring and developing ideas, and evaluating and developing work. We do this best through a mixture of whole-class teaching and individual/group activities. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children. They encourage children to evaluate their own ideas and methods, and the work of others, and say what they think and feel about them. Children are exposed to a wide range of significant artists across the year. We give children the opportunity within lessons to work on their own and collaborate with others, on projects in two and three dimensions and on different scales. Children also have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources, including ICT.

In order to deliver our curriculum we follow the Access Arts programme of study https://www.accessart.org.uk/. This has been adapted to suit our mixed age classes and ensure progression across the school whilst maintaining a broad coverage of the different art applications. In the files below you will see how our curriculum has been mapped out.

Artsmark Award!!!!
In March 2024 we achieved our 'SILVER Artsmark Award!'. The Artsmark award is the only creative quality standard for schools and educational settings, accredited by Arts Council England. The Arts Council support settings to develop and celebrate their committment to arts and cultural education. This award has now expired and we have submitted a new statement of commitment to the Arts Council to continue this journey and receive the appropriate recognition for our work.Â
We received some wonderful feedback from the assessors at the Arts Council:
'Engaging with the arts is having tangible results on pupils, staff and parental engagement. Arts and culture feature in school planning, and are well supported by SLT, a named governor, specialist teaching staff and extra-curricular provision. Pupils access a consistent and relevant range of experiences in school and on visits outside the classroom which leads to showcasing within school and the local community. It’s great to hear about your delivery of Arts Award Discover and roll out of Explore later this year. This journey has focussed on embedding a new progression-based curriculum for art, doing more engagement, and consolidating your good practice with many new staff. It’s good to hear that you are considering diversity and inclusion within the curriculum through Access Art. You have seen staff confidence grow through internal support from your specialist teachers, team teaching and some individual teachers accessing practitioner led CPD.'

Over the past few years we have taken part in an art exhibition at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-lyme and produced a collaborative piece based on the given theme. Arts Award
The Arts Lead is trained in the delivery of Arts Award- 'Discover' and 'Explore'. The programme encourages children to study and work on different forms of art, learn about significant artists and organisations and create a final piece of work. Children then have the opportunity to share their work with others in an assembly or small group. Along the way the children record and evidence their arts journey. All participating children have been successful in achieving the 'Arts Discover' or gaining their qualification in 'Art Explore' - Congratulations to them all!!

Arts Weeks
June 2023
The children were excited to join in with our 'Access All Arts' Arts week in June. Over the period of the week the children took part in a range of activities that encompassed photography, drama, singing and visual arts. Here are a few words from the children:
- "I enjoyed the photography because it tricked people into thinking they were bigger than they are".
- "We were trying new ways how to act. This really helped with my confidence and skills".
- "I liked the singing because we got active as well!

The children were also lucky enough to work with a visiting artist, William Ashley-Norman from 'Chickenwired". William worked across the school with the children to create their own chicken wire sculpture. The children very much enjoyed the activity and the outcomes were fantastic!! Here are a few words from the children:
- "It was really fun learning new things and how to make things from chicken wire".
- "I liked cutting the wire, it was hard but good. I liked adding the tissue paper".
- "It was really, really fun. Getting the tissue paper in the middle was the hardest part. I enjoyed it".
